What are Majorica pearls? Majorica Jewelry had been producing organic, man-made pearls since 1890 on the island of Mallorca, Spain. These organic man-made pearls are handcrafted in a process that mirrors that of cultured pearls!
How are the made? Focusing on the quality of workmanship, Majorica pearls are made one-by-one through an intensely time-consuming process, just as if they were being formed in an oyster. From start to finish, this one-of-a-kind procedure involves the following steps: • Transparent opaque porcelain material is melted to make a nucleus. • The nuclei are then rotated and inspected for roundness and put through a sieve to ensure that the size of each differs by no more than .2mm. • The sorted nuclei are then placed on posts in preparation for the coating of Majorica’s “pearl essence”, made from minute crystals embedded in fish scales. These crystals are mixed with coloring and binding agents to create the pearl essence, or nacre. • The nucleus then undergoes a series of dippings in this essence and is followed by the drying, cleaning and polishing stages. • For the final coat, Majorica uses a special chemical to harden the surface while protecting the color from the ultra-violet radiation, discoloration, chipping and peeling. • The pearls are double knotted, by hand, using a combination of silk and rayon thread. • Each strand is beautifully finished with a unique sterling silver or 18kt vermeil pearl clasp. • At last, the jewelry is complete and the final product is packaged and distributed worldwide in over 100 countries.
What types of pearls does Majorica manufacture? • Tahitian - colors range from deep eggplant to peacock greens, as well as shades of black. • South Sea Pearls - colors range from white and crème to gold and produce baroque (irregular) shaped pearls, in addition to round. • Akoya pearls - considered the industry standard, this is the most popular type of pearl. Colors range from white and creamy to rose hues. • Freshwater pearls - shaped like a raisin, a grain of rice or a flat coin, colors are offered in shimmering pastel hues to deep bronzes. • Majorica offers 10 pearl colors: white, gray, Tahitian, champagne, aubergine, pink, lilac, peach, nuage, and crème, in addition to sizes ranging from 4mm to 16mm.
